Vellichor Books, an independent bookstore located in the city centre, focussed on
community building and inclusivity, is celebrating its first year of successful trading
by stepping forward for a Staffordshire Business Award. By applying for a High
Street Impact award, they are hoping to shine a positive light on their own venture
and the city centre as a whole.
Vellichor Books has built an enthusiastic and growing community since first opening
in early 2024 and the first 12 months of trading has seen multiple book signings.
Author events, 4 book launches and poetry reading evenings. These events have
attracted new visitors to the city centre and supported many writers and artists
along the way.
Mitch Hughes, owner and book enthusiast, is passionate about ensuring that
Vellichor Books is a welcoming and multi use space to help create positive
experiences in Stoke-on-Trent city centre. Hosting regular book clubs, board game
evenings and art exhibitions, Mitch also offers his upstairs space to home educators
free of charge.
With a focus on collaboration and connection, Vellichor Books regularly works with
other city centre businesses & community groups including being a drop off point
for Community Noodles and partnering with the North Staffordshire Wellbeing
College. Plans for the next 12 months include new exhibitions, collaborations to
bring more visitors to the city centre and continuing to build on their fundraising
efforts for local and national charities.
Mitch said, “by entering the High Street Impact award with the University of
Staffordshire, we hope to raise the confidence of all businesses in the city centre as
well as shine a light on what a positive high street experience can look like.”
